Interview with Robert Dornhelm

1  Robert Dornhelm, the director of the movie, was interviewed on May 20, 2001. Enjoy!

Int: What made you want to do a project on Anne Frank?

RD: I had always been familiar with Anne Frank and her life, and I thought it would be a good idea to show people what it was really like for her and her family before and after hiding. I had read her diary many times before filming, and I knew that there was more to her story then what meets the eye. For example, the betrayl. This horrific detail in Anne's life is so important for people to know.

Int: Now, you were not allowed to use any passages from Frank's diary. How were you able to cope with that?

RD: I must admit, it was hard not using any of her famous quotations. However, Kirk Ellis "re-wrote" them in a way to make them authentic. At first, I thought the story would be disasterous if we didn't use her real passages. Then we decided to somewhat change them around a bit, and focus more on her life then just her diary.

Int: Many people make her out to be a "saint." What do you think?

RD: This issue is one we tried to get away from. We did not intend to make her a saint. We wanted to shape her into something real and ordinary. She was a normal little girl who was afraid, tired, and confused on the terrible things happening outside her hiding place. She loved to write, and we strongly show this fact in this production. Frank was not a saint, but she gave hope to millions, and I think that's what makes her so interesting.

Int: How did you pick Hannah Taylor Gordon out of the thousands of young girls who auditioned?

RD: I was getting wary of all of the girls who were auditioning. I thought we would never find the perfect Anne Frank. There were some who we considered, but we always opposed of doing it. Finally, Hannah sent us a tape of herself talking about why she wanted to the part. I was amazed of how much she looked like Anne. After two minutes of her audition, I casted her as our Anne Frank.

Int: Why did you want to show the betrayll?

RD: Kirk and I thought about this detail for a very long time. We kept going back and forth, whether to show this important mark in Anne's life or not. We decided to show it, and we asked Miep Gies about it. She agreed, and we did a lot of research on who betrayed the people in hiding.

Gordon Plays Frank with an Honourable Performance

1  I found this article from May of 2001 when the movie was released on ABC. Enjoy!

'Gordon Plays Frank with an Honourable Performace' by Dianne Leech, May 19, 2001

Almost all can say that they know the story of the young Jewish girl hiding from the Nazis. Yes, her name is Anne Frank, and she comforted herself by writing in a red-checkered diary, which was known as "Kitty." The family was betrayed on August 4, 1944, which we see in Anne Frank: The Whole Story.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the premiere to this new miniseries. I happened to meet a few of the actors who plays their characters with pure excellence. I was very pleased with meeting with Hannah Taylor Gordon, the young British actress who plays Anne Frank. She is a very mature child for the age of only 14. When I asked what her favorite part of being in this ABC production, she said meekly, "I was very honored by being able to portray this young heroin. Her story is very important, and I'm just so thrilled that I was allowed to help her tell her story." After this question, it was time to see the miniseries with the rest of the actors, crew members, and other critics. The theatre was packed with people who were curious about this production, particularly, because concentration camp scenes would be shown. This adaption of Frank's story is the very first to show the audience what happens after the betrayl of the people in hiding.

When the three hour miniseries was over, the audience was all in tears, including me. I must say, this production is an excellent, authentic adaption of Frank's story, and the cast is as authentic as the story. Ben Kingsley does a wonderful job playing Anne's father, Otto Frank. Newcomer, Jesscia Manley is perfect as the young heroin's sister, Margot Frank. But the actress who steals the show is 14-year-old Hannah Taylor Gordon. She looks exactly like Anne, and her performance is honourable. As Anne grows, she grew also, making her performance as realistic as possible. Gordon is the best young actress I've seen this year, and she deserves several awards for a job well done. If you want to see an authentic version of Anne Frank's life, Anne Frank: The Whole Story is the one to see!

A Review by a Fan--Emma D.

1  Fans are more than welcome to leave a review about the movie. Thanks to Emma D. for leaving a brief review about Anne Frank: The Whole Story.

'Anne Frank' Shows the Whole Story

Although the 2001 miniseries is not based on Anne's actual diary, the film portrays the story with such an authenticy, that the viewer will be stunned. Gordon plays Frank where she displays her heroism as well as compassion and loneliness. Yes, Frank was indeed extremely lonely while she lived in the Secret Annex, and one can clearly see this fact throughout the time she is in hiding. The rest of the cast does a splendid job with their roles, particularly Ben Kingsley who plays Mr. Otto Frank.

When I first found out about this film, or miniseries, I wanted to see it. The fact that this prouction wasn't based on Anne's diary, did not bother me. As long as the story got the facts right, then I was satisfied. And I was more than satisfied with this miniseries. I love how the story goes beyond Anne's story to the betrayl, although I hated seeing the people betrayed when they were so close to the liberation. However, people need to see what it was like for them after hiding. Anne Frank: The Whole Story is an extraordinary movie about a young girl's dreams and heroism. A must-see.
